Human Development in Thailand

Selfish people are in such a hurry to get rich that they do not know when poverty is about to strike.                                               Proverbs 28:22
In relation to my previous article, Thailand is ranked 103rd  out of 187 countries in the Human Development Index released by The United Nations. Thailand also placed in the medium human development countries and when compared within the ASEAN Economic Community, Thailand ranked number 4 in the group. Singapore which is ranked 26th in the Human Development Index is number one in the ASEAN group; Brunei, ranked number 33, comes in second place. These two countries are classified as the Very High human development countries. Malaysia which is ranked in 61st place in the HDI table comes in number 3 and is categorized as a High human development country. Thailand, ranked number 103 in the HDI table, comes in 4th; Philippines, ranked 112th, comes in 5th; Indonesia, ranked 124th, comes in 6th; Vietnam, ranked 128th, comes in 7th; Laos, ranked 138th, comes in 8th; Cambodia, ranked 139th, comes in 9th. All countries in this group fall into the Medium human development countries and Myanmar, ranked 149th, comes in the 10th place of the ASEAN Economic Community and is classified as a Low human development country.
Today, I want you to look at the Human Development Index of Thailand by province. I have no intention of comparing which provinces are better than the others. This HDI of Thailand by province is for the year 2007, but was printed and distributed in 2009. It is very interesting that only 5 provinces are classified and they are the ones having Very High human development. According to this report they are namely; Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Udon Thani and Chiang Mai and only 10 provinces including Chonburi, Prachuap Kiri Khun, Khon Kaen, Surat Thani, Samut Prakan, Nakhon Ratchasima, Krabi, Pratum Thani, Rayong and Ubon Rachathani are in the High human development. The rest are in the Medium human development.
The mean of Thailand’s HDI in 2007 is 0.783. They compare HDI province by province with countries that are in the same HDI. For example, Phuket which has HDI at 0.931, is in the same HDI as Brunei, and Chiang Mai which has HDI at 0.904 is equivalent to United Arab Emirates.
Remember, when you are looking at the HDI ranking of provinces, to not get too worried because HDI is just numbers that are calculated from statistical formulas which measure only 3 areas. The three areas are: Health, Education and Income of the population. In truth, there are other important dimensions that should be considered. For instance, the sustainability of utilizing natural resources, the transfer of arts and cultures, the peacefulness of society, the pollution of the environment and so on.
What I want to encourage you to think about when you are looking at the HDI of provinces is that there are only 5 provinces that have Very High human development with an HDI of 0.9 up. There are only 10 provinces that have High human development with an HDI in the 0.8 range and the rest of the 61 provinces are in the Medium human development group with an HDI lower than 0.8. All numbers demonstrate the differences in education, health and income of the population of Thai people and there remains a considerable gap among the population.
What can we do to provide fair and equal growth of Education, Medication and Public Health services and Economy to all provinces? What can we do to help the growth of the nation be for everyone and not just for the 15 big cities of Thailand?
This is the foundation of the problem in Thailand at the moment. It is our problem that all Thais have to turn around and face one another and work together for a solution. At least, let’s work to stop the expansion of the gap between the rich and the poor that is growing in Thailand.
Anna Lindh saidThe world is richer than ever, and the gaps between rich and poor are wider.”
What shall I say? J Amen
